ETAS Selects Aonix PERC Ultra for Automotive Diagnostics System
Solution brings together portable Java™ code and PERC Ultra's deterministic, reliable behavior San Jose, CA, April 14, 2008 Aonix®, the provider of the PERC product line for embedded and real-time Java developers, announced ETAS' selection of the PERC Ultra virtual machine (VM) for a new line of automotive service diagnostic equipment. ETAS Group, a subsidiary of Bosch, provides General Motors and other major automotive OEMs with dealer service tools. Thanks to PERC Ultra, ETAS has been able to more easily support the multiple architectures and RTOSs working in their service tool chain. PERC will facilitate use of Java code on a portable, ARM/Linux-based, automotive diagnostic tool. ETAS chose to develop their system with Java to gain the portability advantages inherent in Java code and virtual machine execution environments, which enables the same code to run on multiple hardware devices and operating systems. Unlike ordinary virtual machines, Aonix PERC Ultra gives ETAS' Java developers a virtual machine with predictable response and reliable operation as well as supporting multiple architectures and real-time operating systems. The ETAS system enables automotive technicians to connect to onboard vehicle computers from multiple diagnostic devices on different types of platforms. Modern automobiles typically have a standard service connector mounted near the steering column. A Java-based software solution gives technicians the ability to use diagnostic software running on a PC as well as other types of devices, so that technician can use handheld devices or wireless, Internet-capable handheld devices like cell phones. The software can also be integrated with a database to show the technician specific information about replacement parts or even disassembly instructions.
