L-3 Telemetry Selects Aonix PERC VM for Upgrade of Java™ Real-Time Data Acquisition System
PERC VM replaces existing Java™ virtual machine Embedded Systems Conference, San Jose, CA,
April 4, 2006 Aonix®, the provider of the PERC® real-time virtual machine for embedded targets, announced that the Telemetry-West division of L-3 Communications has selected the Aonix PERC Virtual Machine for the System 550 Real-Time Data Acquisition System. System 550 is the fastest and most complete commercial-off-the-shelf system available for real-time data acquisition, processing, distribution, control, display, analysis, and archiving. System 550 is used in applications as diverse as flight test, satellite command and control, avionics test and integration, and space communications. For the System 550 upgrade, L-3 selected the PERC VM to replace the existing Java™ VM in order to enhance performance and supportability while maintaining Java™ Standard Edition compatibility. PERC is the leading clean-room solution for embedded J2SE Java developers, featuring paced, reliable garbage collection, predictable performance, and compatibility with a broad range of off-the-shelf components. “PERC provides Java developers with the best path to high productivity for complex embedded applications such as the System 550,” said Dave Wood, Aonix product manager. “We’re pleased that L-3 has recognized the value of PERC for their time-to-market needs for this strategic program.” “PERC provides an excellent fit for our needs,” noted Gilles K/Bidy, Senior Software Manager of L-3 Communications. “We were able to migrate from the previous Java VM to PERC in a matter of weeks with no real technical issues. An unexpected but welcome benefit of the migration to PERC was that it brought us notable performance improvements.” First introduced nine years ago, PERC is the most widely used real-time Virtual Machine available for Java developers, with fielded installations in telecommunications, telematics, avionics, deep space exploration, and office automation applications. PERC supports most major real-time operating systems and a variety of target processors including PowerPC, XScale, ARM, and Intel x86 architectures. PERC is a clean-room virtual machine expressly created for demanding embedded and real-time systems requiring J2SE™ support. PERC delivers the ease and efficiency of Java™ Standard Edition support without sacrificing integrity, performance, or real-time behavior. It offers AOT and JIT compilation, remote debug support, deterministic garbage collection, standard graphics and extended commercial RTOS support. The PERC product line also features PERC Pico, a virtual machine designed for hard real-time applications requiring fast execution, small footprint, and access to low-level devices.
